I want you look into other formats of editorials. Humor and satire are other forms of saying things...ways of making a social commentary. I want you to look for humor and satire and write what you think it IS actually saying. What is the truth behind it! For example!

You are to look for 4 editorials online. (I will allow you to choose at least one in Spanish).
Here are some places you can at:

New York Times

El Nuevo Día

Claridad Editorial

The Washington Post

I encourage you to look for more options. I will require you to post on your blog 1 in Spanish and three in English.

  1. Identify which editorial you liked the most.
  2. Why did you pick that one?
  3. Summarize it for your reader.
  4. Do you find that the author is/was well informed?
  5. Quote and post which parts are your favorite.
  6. What type of language is being used?
  7. Is the author passionate?

Let's look at the following Editorials and discuss them in class:
Jay Fonseca

Washington Post

Instructions:
1. Look at your list closely.
2. I want you to separate your list into two parts: Social and Personal.
You may feel compelled to ask: What is social? What is personal? Social I would define as those things that are found "out there" in the world. Things that affect how you live your day to day life. Personal? Well, lets' put it this way, those are things that you can sort of live with. You know, like when someone snaps their gum when their chewing and you can just walk away and that's it...nobody needs to die over it (although, if I am PMSing WATCH OUT...you may want to swallow your gum before I smack you upside the head!)

2. Once you've separated your list, reflect on why those items you placed under personal are personal to you and why are those things social. No need to do one by one. Just look at your new separated list and give me a few sentences on how the two are different.

3. Now, I want you to write about why those social things fell into that category? Are there any similarities? Can you see a common thread that weaves them together? For example, if you look closely the social side of my list are things that have to do with PR.

4. Focusing on that social side, choose (1-3) that are closest to you and explain WHY? What is the story behind that social issue you chose?

5. On your own: Research a little about that issue.

On April 4 we watched the documentary "Mickey Mouse Monopoly" which deconstructs our common view of Disney-- a place we see as whole and pure while others don't really see it that same way. There are always two sides of the same coin. If you haven't seen it please click on the title of the movie which will direct you to site that has it. Once you see it I want you to reflect about the following:
  1. What were your feelings about Disney before watching the documentary?
  2. What was your initial reaction after watching the documentary?
  3. What did you learn?
  4. How would you approach the topic about Disney in the future?
  5. What "clicked" for you? What made you reflect or shift your point of view...if anything? If nothing really clicked for you, what do you believe is missing?

Time to WRITE!!! Address the questions  that I have provided!

Give feedback
And if you are through with all that then you will do the following...this is light so have fun!
Choose two songs: One you really like and one you really really really DISLIKE!
1. Post both videos
2. Talk to me about the lyrics of each
3. What is it about those particular songs that you like...what is it that you REALLY dislike
4. What type of music do you generally go for
5. ONLY ONE OK!

Now, go over your description, looking for every word that carries frightening or painful associations. These words have more power than you might think.

Make 3 columns:
One with loving words, another with neutral words and other words that carry stress, anger of judgement!

Which column has more words? Why do you think that that is so?

How many times have you done this before? How does this make you feel? What do you see that is revealing? What did you learn about yourself?

GOOD MORNING!!! Yay...Halloween Week! October is almost over and November promises to be a short month!
I've been observing some patterns that have kept me thinking. When I assign feedback I mean FEEDBACK! This is not "Let me do whatever else time!" Either you are giving feedback or getting up to date on your postings. I know who's falling behind and who is up to date. You guys know I know, so how do you NOT know or want to believe that this will affect your grade adversely. Your feedback is part of your grade. How you give feedback and that you do it in a timely manner is part of your grade as well as you entries. I've told you this from the beginning! No excuses.
For those of you who are up to date and are an active member of this writing community...YAY!!! Thank you for your seriousness with the class and keep up the good work!
For today:
Take 15 minutes and write a description of your life—stream of consciousness,
no self-judgment, no editing. JUST WRITE!! SILENCE! Describe you life...

In 15 minutes you will have another blog post!
Good luck!!
